In the Bon historical records [Chögyal Namkhai Norbu] the so called "Maryig" (Smar script) of Zhang-zhung was the original Bon writing system in Tibet. In many libraries of old monasteries in Tibet there are ancient manuscripts handwritten in the script referred to as "smar-tshugs" or "lha babs yi ge" (heaven descended script) .
